Santetsu karaoke and weekend tour 2017

Our year-end karaoke gathering with a chartered Santetsu train became popular event since 2014. 11 people commuted from Tokyo for this event and had a great time with locals.

Date: 2-3 December 2017 (karaoke train on 2 December)

Chartered Santetsu train with karaoke

At Ichinoseki, the ground was covered with thin snow and crispy cold on Saturday. We chartered Santetsu train between Ofunato and Kamaishi and had a round trip in approx. 2 hours. 12 local people joined the event. Few students joined as the schedule conflicted with sports club activities. The luxury train in purple was built by supports by Kuwait. This short excursion helps passengers forget their daily life. We sung, laugh and had a fun time.

Tsunakan (ryokan; Japanese hotel)

We stayed at “Tsunakan” in Kesennuma. Tsunakan used to be a house for a family which lived on aquaculture and was converted to a ryokan (Japanese style hotel). Its stories after the tsunami and recent tragic accident are known. My point, though is our unchanged love to Ichiyo-san and all the staff. Its warm atmosphere, food, drink and karaoke were all great. Thank you for welcoming us! We will come to stay with you soon.

Oshima island, Kesennuma

The members visited Oshima last year recommended re-visit this island. We passed Kesennuma bay on a ferry. As always, sea gulf gathered around the ferry to get Kappa-ebisen (shrimp flavored chips). Ms K, one of our members lives near and introduced the beautiful spots in the island.

There is a secret sand beach after 15 minutes walk in forest. The beach is named Kugunari-hama and registered as a national monument. When we walk over the sand, the sand sounds. This is why the beach has a noun “nari” means sound. The sea of Oshima is green whereas the sea of Sanriku is bright blue. I like both colors.

A walk to Kugnari-hama was a up and down the hill. After the exercise, we were hungry and stopped at “Komatsu”, local restaurant. The cook grilled giant oysters harvested in Oshima. Some had sashimi, seafood rice bowl, seafood noodle, sake, etc. We were all full with delicious lunch.

Before boarding the ferry back to Kesennuma, we dropped off at a beach and took a photo. The weather was clear and the scenery was magnificent. Some of the members fell asleep on the way back to Ichinoseki.

You can make a weekend trip to Sanriku. Welcome!
