Santetsu karaoke train and weekend tour 2018

The annual December event, “Santetsu Karaoke Train”, marked our  5th year. The event this year was held at the beginning of a mild December. We had 6 people from Tokyo and 14 local people on board . We indulged in endless Karaoke and chat while enjoying the beautiful Sanriku scenery.

Dates : December 1-2, 2017 (Chartered Santetsu Train Karaoke took place on Dec. 1)

Chartered Santetsu Karaoke Train

The chartered Sanriku Railroad South Ria-Coast train makes the round trip between Oofunato and Kamaishi in two hours. It was windy but a fine sunny day despite the forecast. The view outside was stunning. As usual, the main attractions were Karaoke and delightful conversations with an occasional peek outside. Also, as with every year, we had a blast! Spending time outside of the classroom bonds us together and makes us as close as friends and relatives.

Tsunakan Stay

Our accommodation again this year was at “Tsunakan.” Because we have been here many times before, it felt like we’ve returned to our home base. We enjoyed delicious Kesennuma foods such as oysters, sword fish, tuna fish tail. We became friends with other hotel guests who were seated next to us. They were locals from the Tohoku area. We sang Karaoke and had a jolly time together. Encounters like this are priceless.

Kessennuma Local Food Cooking Class

We also enjoyed a cooking class which we’ve signed up for through the tourist association. The class was taught by two moms from the area and we all cooked together. A dish by the name “Hattou”, where you hand-tear flour dough and cook them in broth. We used fish this time in Hattou making it “Fish Hattou”. The fish we used in the Fish Hattou is called “Donko”. Other menu items included “Ookarakuwa Ofukasi” and “Kaki Namasu” that uses dried persimmons. While we were cooking, we also learnt about local culture and history. Local vegetables were very fresh and the traditional food which was prepared with care was a pure pleasure to experience.

We enjoyed the food we made for lunch. We invited staff from Tsunakan to the lunch table so that all 11 people gathered around. We spent such fun-filled and relaxed time. This may be because all the staff at Tsunakan was welcoming or food was delicious or probably both.

It is already December. We are returning to the area rather soon since the December Komo’s English lesson is going to be held. Let us know if there is anybody who would like to join us. Let’s look forward to the next Sanriku trip!
