February 2019

Here is the report on the February activities.

* Total participants : 34 (2 people came twice during the weekend bringing the total participation number to 36)

* Volunteer coaches : 10 (full participation 8, partial participation 2. We welcomed one new coach this month)

Mr. W who was visiting from Melbourne, Australia, shared his precious time in Japan with us and participated in classes for the second time. There are 4 members who are with us almost every month. We also include volunteer coaches with various backgrounds and personalities. As our group grows, the dynamic of the group becomes more interesting.
Each participant brings their own interest in the language, goals and purpose along with their everyday life experiences. It is more important to pay attention and align ourselves with each member rather than simply expand the membership.

We are continuing with the day care facility visit which we started in December. This month we started with the 20-30 Minuit singing practice of Furusato (Hometown). Thirty minutes or so after the practice, we begun an a-cappella session with local folk songs, Ohayashi, Kouta (Japanese ballad sang to samisen accompaniment), and some older songs from the Showa era. About 24 residents whose ages were mostly from the late 80s to 90s and a handful of 100s! participated this month. Some faces are becoming familiar which makes us feel that there are some people looking forward to our visit

There are more English teaching institutions in the Rikuzentakata area since the great disaster 8 years ago. It is wonderful to see an increase in the English learners community. Since our founding of the Komos English in 2011, we took care not to get in the way of the areas English schools. We prefer to be a gateway to their journey into the English learning adventure. We will be here to usher them into the world of English.

See you next month!
