July 2019

This is Komo’s English@Sanriku July, 2019 report.

  • Participants : 27 (29 if dual sessions participations are counted, 1 new participation)
  • Volunteer coaches : 10 (6 full participation, 4 partial participation)

We are seeing a gradual participation increase in On-Line Coaching (distance individual sessions conducted via on-line tools such as LINE, Facebook Messenger, Zoom, etc) An added fun is to meet new on-line coaches when they actually visit Rikuzentakata. If you are interested in our on-line coaching, please contact us.

Our spin-off programs are making great progress too. The Saturday afternoon Day Care Center visit includes practice of the song, “Furusato (hometown)”, in English and a showcase of the center residents’ local Ohayashi (musical accompaniment which is played on traditional Japanese instruments) and festival songs in the allotted one hour. These activities are bringing us closer together. Members of the Komo’s English are impressed and inspired by those residents who are in the 90-100 years old age group and practice the songs in English.

This month, we tried a new program, the “Wine & Whisky English Club@Rikuzentakata.” We predict that our local nigh scene will be more vibrant as we make further recovery in the Rikuzentakata area and the people in the area may have more opportunity to communicate with visitors from overseas over drinks. The program should also help people prepare for a situation where drinking is involved when visiting overseas. We want to share English expressions relating to drinking situations and basic alcohol tasting knowledge. We are looking forward to the program’s official debut in September.

Our annual “English Summer Festival in Rikuzentakata” will replace the monthly English classes in August. We will go full throttle on the event!

See you next month or a month after!
