June 2019

This is Komo’s English@Rikuzentakata June, 2019 report.

Rainy season begun in the Rikuzentakata area. It almost as if the seasonal rain front traveled north with us from the Tokyo area. We appreciate many people participating in this month’s Komo’s English despite the wet weather

  • Participants : 33 (36 if multiple sessions are counted, not counting Day Care Center participants)
  • Volunteer coaches : 8 (3 partial participation)

We held the Friday evening session at the Rikuzentakata Global Campus. There were 8 participants including a new member and 6 volunteer coaches. Some were studying for Eiken (an English proficiency test in Japan) and some were practicing conversational English and some simply worked on areas of that interested them.

Our annual “English Summer festival in Rikuzentakata”, which will be held in August, hosts SCCOA (Sports Camp of America) camp counselors. We will make a communication in English through various sports and we will also conduct a tour with an information session to introduce the Rikuzentakata area and the Japanese culture. We will show and dance together to Takata Ondo (traditional dancing song)! Our participants who are scheduled to give a tour are all eagerly preparing for the event.
Some of the volunteer members went to the Day Care Center. Our senior residents have become accustomed to our sessions that they welcomed the new game, “greeting in English” on top of our usual singing practice of “Furusato (hometown).” The session was very relaxed and enjoyable.
When we stay in the area, Ms. Osaka normally hosts us and prepares meals for us. Lately, we, the coaches, have taken up the cook’s role on Saturday evenings. It is actually very enjoyable to cook meals using the local Sanriku ingredients. We had 6 participants during the Sunday morning session. We are going strong because of those participants, supporters, and volunteers. Thank you very much.

See you next month!
