November 2018

Time for a recap of the November 2018 Komo’s English Class@Sanriku!

  • Participants: 31, including three new members
  • Volunteer coaches: Total 8 (7 full participation and 1 partial)

We’re entering our eighth year of Komo’s English Class at Rikuzentakata! Yes, it’s been seven full years since we started up in November 2011.

Among this month’s participants were those who have been with us for seven years, those who’ve just joined us, and those who’ve been introduced to us by past participants. It all means a lot to us.

For the coaches as well, this month, we were happy to be rejoined by Mr. Y, who had volunteered with us in the first half of 2012, and Mr. I, also after a few years’ absence.

In these past seven years, we’ve seen the number of both participants and supporters for Let’s Talk Foundation activities grow. It is a blossoming of relationships whose seeds were planted in Rikuzentakata, and it warms our hearts.

There are some new developments too as we enter our eighth year. We’ve decided to start making some use of online communications—something that we’d been consciously avoiding up to now—just among the participants of Komo’s English Class. At this point, we have no intention to expand purely online-based interactions. Rather, we see this as a way to follow up with participants who couldn’t make it to a particular session because of scheduling conflicts, or who feel that they’d like to have more opportunities to ask questions and use English beyond the monthly meet-up.

In fact, while we were in Rikuzentakata this time around, we tried sending an invite via email, just among the local participants and received feedback from five. So we’ll continue experimenting with it J Using online communications means that it will be possible to reconnect with people like former volunteer coaches who may now be living overseas. It’s sure to help revive old relationships and bring new connections into our path.

So we are off to a great start to our eighth year!

We are grateful to all of you who have supported us on our journey to date, and to the paths and fortunes that have brought us all together.
