Blog of 2012. How we came across Mr Sato and started “The Seed of Hope in the Heart”

We, Komo and Hiroko, would like to talk about Mr Teiichi Sato who has been our source of inspiration.dt201212-07

  • Mr Sato is an owner of Sato seed shop, a local seed store which sells seeds, seedling, soil, etc

  • He was in a package store locaeted by the national road 45, run along the coast

  • He escaped from the tsunami by a mere chance and survived
  • His shop and house were washed away by the tsunami  including all the seeds to be sold for spring season
  • Nothing remained in the area where his house and shop located
  • Debt remained
  • He says “Only if the tsunami also washed the dept away” “But I want to keep my bond between my business partners and I thus feel I have to repay the debt”

 

  • Mr Sato started selling seedlings on his father’s small pick up truck
  • He build a temporary shop by himself. Since all the DIY stores disappeared, he picked up wood, nail, all the materials to build the store
  • He painted a face on the door of the shed
  • He carpenter store sign himself
  • Whenever we say them great work, he says “Not that much. They are my amateur work”

  • Water is vital for growing plants. Water supply and sewerage systems are no longer in operation
  • 5 meters of well is his current water supply. He himself dug the well
  • Without well digging tool, he invented the tools. Firstly he used a ladle, then bamboo shovels, and many other try-and-errors
  • Now he installed water pump – of course by himself
  • He learned carpenter work after the disaster
  • He says “When there is a will, there is a way”

  • Mr Sato had been a professional in developing improved varieties of tomatose until he returned back to his home country
  • He has been studying which seed grows strong on the salt contaminated soil
  • He grows many types of tomatoes
  • He says “Sawing a seed and growing it help people regain energy

  • Mr Sato wrote a collection of experimentary notes after the tsunami
  • The first edition was published on 11 March, 2012 one year after the disaster

 

  • Mr Sato wrote in English
  • He is not good in English
  • He could not write in  his mother tongue because it directly reminded him the painful experiences
  • He needed a bit of distance between the words and his emotion
  • However, he believed that he shall hand the learnings on to the next generation and broader areas
  • This is how ”The Seed of Hope in the Heart” began

 

  • The third edition is planning to be published in March 2013
  • He learned more stories to share
  • How to reduce the scale of impact
  • How to prevent the similar tragidies
  • Mr Sato says “We shall learn from the history”

  • Mr Sato keeps sowing seeds, watering and growing them
  • Spring will arrive soon. Then summar comes. Tomatoes in his garden will grow in abundance

  • We pass on the fact and individual stories
  • We are always moved by Mr Sato’s relentless effort to tell the story over the geography and time
