April 2018

This is the April, 2018, Komo’s English Class @Rikuzentakata recap.

  •  Participants: Total 34, one of them a new student
  •  Volunteer Coaches: Total 13 (7 full participation, 6 partial participation. The lesson was the first time for one of the coaches.

Spring has arrived! After a very long and severe winter, the Tohoku area is suddenly enveloped with cherry, plum, and peach blossoms with their brightness permeating the entire region. We received some wonderful news from our students who graduated high school and went onto collages this spring.

This month at Komo’s English, we provided one-on-one lessons to all participants based on their interests. We had few elementary school students this weekend. One of them has been studying English expressions used in cooking recipes, another has just started exchanging letters with an Australian friend and wanted to work on it, of course there was a student who simply wanted to review tests subjects. Among adult students, there was a student who was making her own poem into a study material and another one who’s started to tackle with TED speech. We welcomed student who came for a trial lesson. Some of the long-term students participated and saw each student’s progress. We have known them for a long time and it feels like we are extended family.

Coaches came to invest what they could. Some took multiple bullet train rides to get to the class, some came early to stay in Ichinoseki for Saturday morning class, some drove few hours to come to the venue. One coach came to fill in to stay right until he had to go on a business trip on Sunday. The classes on Friday evening and Sunday morning were full. On Saturday when the class didn’t fill up, some coaches, who didn’t have students, enjoyed beautiful Sanriku spring day by taking photographs outside, going for grocery shopping, going to the farm to help, or jogging.

The preparation of “English Summer Festival in Rikizentakata” (A sports event conducted in English which we have held for the past two years) has already commenced among the committee members. The festival is to take place during the August Komo’s English. We have begun preliminary meetings with local volunteers during this month’s English class.

The fact that all the past participants of the festival came to the meeting is a testament to wonderful quality of past festivals. This makes us proud and resolute to do a good job again this year.

Looking forward to the next month’s lesson.
