February 2018

This is the recap of February, 2018, Komo’s English Class@Sanriku.

  • Date: February 2 (Fri) ~ 25 (Sun), 2018
  • Participants: Total 36 including 2 new member
  • Volunteer Coaches: Total 9 (5 full participation and 4 partial participation

Our members belong to different generations – from Junior High School and High School students to senior citizens – and we share whatever each student is interested in. For instance, Ms. A in the adult class has been working on the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs at the Stanford ceremony of 2005. Working through the very last page of the speech with her during the session was deeply moving for everybody. There are students who bring their school homework, materials on the “history of Tono area”, a list of various expressions in Japanese to be translated. The coaches are not English teachers although we all use English at work. Whenever we encounter something we are not familiar with, the coaches and students look it up together making the classes more enjoyable.

During this month’s class, we had a group of local municipal officers’ visit. The municipality has been researching the ways to augment the English ability of the local people. During the research, they became interested in the “Komo’s English class” because of its unique value, method, and the community. What a wonderful surprise!

We received many heart-warming hand written Christmas cards from Barcelona, again. They’ve been sending them ever since the quake hit the area. Many thanks as always. Our group’s value system is based on “Join”, “Share”, “Do it together” mentality which transcends a “ones who give and ones who take” one. We, participants and a supporter group, have been engaged in the activities for the last six and half years and will continue on, so come join us!
